Learner goals and capabilities

The goal of the ARP is for students to learn community based project development and knowledge discovery. The project topic is in relation to issues identified as important to the prosperity of the community and significant to northern governance and sustainable development. It is anticipated that as graduate learners, students will develop confidence, capacity, and skills in project management, inter-professional collaboration, leadership, critical analyses and knowledge mobilization.

In addition to gaining knowledge and developing skills, students also build capacity by:

  • providing experience working with industry, government, indigenous organizations and institutions and other organizations and stakeholders;
  • fostering professional networks; and
  • serving the research needs of northern community organizations and other stakeholders.

Collectively, the ARP will demonstrate a breadth and diversity of northern-focused concepts that challenge students to be creative and innovative.

Project Examples

Requirements
  • Make a knowledge synthesis of selected trade and commercial cooperation or border cooperation between Canada and the United States.
  • Examine the extent of higher Indigenous education and research, or the extent of ‘the human dimension’ in well-established Arctic initiatives, placed within an educational setting.
  • Investigate the role and status of language revitalization efforts in a community. In addition, the success of various Indigenous language efforts may be included, with a special emphasis on how they apply to other communities or regions.
  • Program evaluation – examines the extent to which the program model or implementation is serving the target population or is functioning as expected. For example, do regional development and innovation funds attract the target group, e.g. how does the information flow works?
